Growing up in Detroit, Joy Gope watched his immigrant parents work hard to build a better life in the U.S. It was their dedication that inspired him to become a first-generation college student.
From Utica to Detroit, Nalani Renta-Villaneuva has been on a journey. What was once an inconvenience in high school, educational experience became something she strove and fought for, something she knew she needed. “I went from not really caring about school to being very into education,” admitted Renta-Villaneuva. “I knew I had so much potential. When the time finally came, going to college was definitely a find-yourself moment for me.”
Like many students in the Mike Ilitch School of Business, Kianna Mateen laid the groundwork for her career while she was still taking classes. And when she walked across the stage at commencement, she already knew what was next: Through a successful internship, Mateen was offered a position working for Ford Motor Co. as a buyer.
Simon Mourani made the most of his time at Wayne State University by engaging with as many people and opportunities as possible — a skill that’s serving him well in his role as associate program manager of public affairs at DTE. In his role, which he started in July 2022, Mourani coordinates and leads community outreach events to enhance the brand, raise awareness of services and programs, and deliver a positive experience to customers on behalf of DTE.
