Training begins soon for tax prep volunteer opportunity

The Accounting Aid Society Collegiate Volunteer Program is seeking Wayne State students to help Detroiters prepare their 2017 income taxes. Mike Ilitch School of Business accounting professors Deborah Habel and Myles Stern help facilitate this program on campus.

Collegiate volunteers have a unique opportunity to assist members of underserved communities in Detroit and southeast Michigan by coaching them toward financial security.  Participants connect directly with the community, learn new skills, strengthen and reinvest in local neighborhoods, build their resumes and network with corporate partners.

To get involved, fill out an interest form on the Accounting Aid Society website. An AAS member will contact you to help you choose your volunteer role: tax preparer, tax site greeter, financial coach or financial workshop facilitator.

Two on-campus training classes are available to volunteers:

  • Tax law class: Sunday, Dec. 3, or Sunday, Jan. 7
  • Tax software class: Sunday, Dec. 10, or Sunday, Jan. 14
