Nominations open for doctoral student awards

As in past years, the Mike Ilitch School of Business will honor its top doctoral students with teaching and research excellence awards. The award recipients will be selected by the school's doctoral program advisory committee. The criteria that will be used in selecting the award recipients is outlined below. Nominees for the award should submit complete applications to Attila Yaprak via email by Friday, July 7 at midnight. The selection committee will announce its decisions by July 15.

Excellence in Teaching Award

This award is designed to recognize a doctoral student for demonstrating excellence in teaching. The purpose of the award is to promote the qualifications of the student in college and university teaching in the future. Applicants/nominees must submit a one-page essay articulating their teaching philosophy, teaching style and other dimensions of their teaching, such as the rigor employed in their course. They must also attach student evaluations and student comments, copies of syllabi for the courses taught, and at least one letter of support from an Ilitch School faculty member. Doctoral students can be nominated or apply themselves for this award after having taught at least two courses (classes). The student can win this award only once during his or her tenure in the doctoral program. The applicant must hold a GSA/GTA status to be considered for this award. The award is a check for $500.

Excellence in Research Award

This award is designed to recognize a doctoral student for demonstrating excellence in research. The purpose of the award is to promote the qualifications of the student as an active researcher in a college or university setting in the future. Applicants/nominees must submit evidence that they have authored/co-authored a paper submitted to a journal or accepted for presentation at a national or international conference. The evidence can be in the form of an acceptance letter from the conference coordinator or receipt of a manuscript letter from a journal editor. They must also attach at least one support letter from an Ilitch School faculty member and a two-page document detailing current research projects. Doctoral students can be nominated or apply themselves for this award. The student can win this award only once during his or her tenure in the doctoral program. The applicant must hold a GSA/GRA status to be considered for this award. The award is a check for $500.
