Ilitch School welcomes Susan Crowley as Director of the Career Planning and Placement Office
My name is Susan Crowley, and I am a dedicated professional in student success. I am excited to be with the Ilitch School of Business. I have over 20 years of experience in the Career Services industry, with a strong background in career counseling and student development. I strongly believe in the Career and Life Design method for college-to-career success, working with students on design thinking as a method of creative problem-solving to produce novel solutions to practical problems. Understanding, exploring, and materializing is key to design thinking, successful career paths, and professional growth. Design thinking is effective when there is incomplete information or the desired result is unknown. It has proved to be a useful lens through which to consider career decisions.
My work also extends to employer engagement, where I create strategic career initiatives that align with the university's prosperity agenda and the College to Career initiative. My ultimate goal is to ensure that students are not just prepared but are confident and ready to meet the demands of the modern workforce.
One of my greatest passions is fostering strong relationships between students, alumni, faculty, and industry professionals. I firmly believe that these connections are instrumental in enhancing career opportunities and ensuring student success. I am excited to bring this passion to the Ilitch School of Business and continue this important work.
Why did you come to the Ilitch School of Business?
I came to the Ilitch School of Business because of its reputation for excellence, the dedication of the faculty and staff, the state-of-the-art facility, and the drive of its students.
What makes you passionate about career advising?
Seeing the direct impact of my work on someone’s life, such as when a student lands their dream job or gains clarity about their career direction, provides me with immense personal satisfaction. I also enjoy problem-solving, so I’m drawn to the complexities of career advising, where each student potentially presents a unique challenge and requires tailored advice.
What do you wish all students would do as they begin thinking about their careers?
I wish all students would focus on collecting relevant experiences as they begin thinking about their careers. Attend professional development events and career fair opportunities, talk with faculty and recruiters in your field of interest, and pursue part-time jobs, volunteer work, and internships to gain experiences that help you grow toward your professional field. These experiences build a resume and provide students with connections, insight, and the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce after graduation.
What makes you excited about Detroit?
It has been exciting to watch the evolution of Detroit over the time I have been at Wayne State. In the past 20+ years, I have had the privilege to witness amazing growth when no turnaround was imagined. New businesses, culture, restaurants, universities, and opportunities popped up in Midtown, Downtown, and Corktown. It was like watching someone breathe life into something dead, making the city vibrant and alive again. It excites me to be a part of the city's diversity, culture, and success.
