Ilitch School announces Professor Deborah Habel to receive 2023 Inspirational Teacher Award
The Mike Ilitch School of Business has announced that Associate Professor of Teaching Deborah L. Habel has been selected to receive the 2023 Inspirational Teacher Award at the 43rd annual Recognition and Awards Program.
Habel is currently an Ilitch School/College of Engineering Global Executive Track PhD student. She is conducting dissertation research on the impact of new technologies on the accounting and finance functions, with a special attention to big data and blockchain.
She joined the Ilitch School faculty in 2014 after a long practitioner career, on which she draws heavily for her classroom instruction
Habel frequently adapts examples from her public accounting and consulting experience to create comprehensive case projects that develop student’s abilities to read, understand and analyze corporate financial statements, and prepare a short-list of solutions and recommendations for implementation.
In her role as Accounting Department Career Coach, Habel mentors students through their internships, and accompanies them to multiple professional organization meetings. In an effort to provide students with the skills they will need in the workplace, Habel founded the required MSOffice application training for all Ilitch School students and has worked the application of those tools throughout the curriculum.
Habel serves as a trustee of the Michigan Accountancy Foundation, CPA Academic Champion and case competition judge for AICPA-CIMA. She is active with the Michigan Association of CPAs, serves on the Ilitch School Faculty Senate, chairing the Undergraduate Education Policy Committe, is faculty advisor to WSU's Alpha Kappa Psi chapter, Wayne Women in Technology, the Warrior Crochet Club, and serves as a faculty liaison for WSU Athletics.
Habel will be honored on November 17, 2023, at the 43rd annual Recognition and Awards Program at the Roostertail. She will be honored next to the recipients of this year’s Michigan Executive of the Year Award, Emerging Leader Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, Outstanding Student Award, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hall of Fame Award and the Corporate Mentorship Program Founders Awards.
