Ilitch Business students rise to top in 2022 Elevator Pitch Competition

On Friday, Oct. 28, a select group of Wayne State University business students vied for scholarships and bragging rights during the eighth annual Mike Ilitch School of Business Elevator Pitch Competition at Detroit’s iconic Renaissance Center, riding to the top with executive judges from the Eli Lilly, GM, Google, Ilitch Holdings and Lear. After two years of virtual programming, 2022 marked the return to in-person workshops and competition.

The winners were:

  • First place, $1,000, senior Najaf Mooraj (global supply chain management and information systems management)
  • Second place, $500, senior Lisa Jerome (management)
  • Third place, $250, senior Elise Hloros (accounting) and junior Olivia Jourdan (management)

The students, dressed and speaking like seasoned professionals, had two attempts at a 90-second ride in a glass-enclosed elevator to give a speech about themselves describing their education, skills and career aspirations. Corporate judges evaluated the competitors on their ability to sell themselves and present a positive, professional first impression. Five finalists then pitched the panel of judges in a boardroom setting.

The Fall 2022 Elevator Pitch Competition was sponsored by the Mike Ilitch School of Business Alumni Council.
