Spots in residential Warriors Business Community filling fast

Living on campus has countless benefits: zero commute, strong bonds to peers and mentors, proximity to Wayne State’s vast resources and Detroit’s many attractions… And, for Mike Ilitch School of Business undergrads who join the Warriors Business Community (WBC), residence life can be a powerful way to start building the professional networks that will serve them throughout their careers, from their very first day on campus.

This year, Wayne State and the Ilitch School are offering an added incentive for students to become residents of the business living-learning community: $2,000 housing scholarships will go to the first 30 newly admitted fall 2016 freshman business majors who sign up.

Incoming and returning business students can indicate that they’d like to be considered for the WBC on their on-campus housing applications. Spots are filling up fast, so students are encouraged to complete their housing applications as soon as possible.

Located on the fourth floor of WSU’s Ghafari Hall, the WBC offers an opportunity for a cohort of business students to live, learn and develop professional connections together right here on Wayne State’s main campus in the heart of Midtown Detroit.

“The WBC has been an integral part of my experience,” said community resident Jack Floyd, who also is the membership officer for the Global Supply Chain Management Student Association. “Living among a group of driven, like-minded individuals has pushed me to be the best I can be, both inside and outside the classroom.”

The WBC encourages community involvement, supports academic success, and provides a fun atmosphere for students to forge lasting relationships with other future professionals, as well as current business leaders.

“Not only has the WBC introduced me to some of my best friends, but it assimilated me with the Mike Ilitch School of Business and has given me invaluable networking opportunities I wouldn't have experienced had I chosen to live anywhere else,” said resident Brianne Lambrecht, a member of Beta Alpha Psi and Business Student Senate.

Recent academic programming for WBC residents — all happening conveniently in Ghafari Hall — has included a 10-week improv class, weekly study sessions with upper-level peer mentors, onsite academic advising and workshops led by the Ilitch School’s Career Planning and Placement Office. WBC residents also have bonded during a ropes course challenge at the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center, holiday parties and decorating contests, and a community outing to the WSU Planetarium.

To grow their professional networks, members of the living-learning community are invited to high-profile events such as the GM Roadshow, InForum Women’s Leadership Luncheon, North American International Auto Show, and alumni executive lunches with PricewaterhouseCoopers and other Detroit firms.

“Through the WBC I’ve become closely connected to upper-level students and faculty at the Mike Ilitch School of Business, and the networking opportunities have allowed me to thrive in various business and social settings,” said Floyd. “I can honestly say I couldn't imagine my experience at Wayne State without the WBC.”
