Mike Silvio, director of supply chain management for Cooper Standard and part-time faculty in the WSU School of Business Administration, said shortage of transportation capacity is a major challenge in the United States. Silvio said many road carriers are shifting loads to rail without the knowledge of their customers.

"If you can’t find drivers, you still need to move the material and rail is an option. It’s better than having it sitting in a yard and not moving for four days," he said. "The real risk of longer supply chains is the length of time it takes to complete the transaction."
