Eight Men's Cross Country Student-Athletes Recognized For Work In The Classroom


Eight members of the Wayne State University men's cross country team were recognized by the GLIAC for academic success.  The three Warriors named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team (cumulative grade-point average of 3.5+) were seniors Travis Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) and Alex Townsend (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and junior Doug Mack (Lake Orion, Mich.).  Five more WSU runners received GLIAC All-Academic team (cumulative grade-point average of 3.0-3.49) recognition including senior Kevin deBear (Plymouth, Mich./Salem), juniors Matt Devey (Canton, Mich./Salem), Jason Smith (Canton, Mich./Salem) and Brad Vincent (Ray, Mich./Romeo), along with sophomore Nicholas Jackson (Washington, Mich./Romeo).

Barczak, a kinesiology major, has competed in all six races this fall with three top-10 finishes including first place at the Detroit Titan Invitational.

Townsend, a finance/accounting major, has also competed in all six races with four top-10 finishes while earning Second Team All-League accolades after an 11th-place showing at the conference meet.

Mack is a pre-med major who has competed in four races including a 22nd-place finish at the George Mason Invitational.

DeBear, a secondary education major, has competed in all six races this fall with four top-10 finishes including earning First Team All-GLIAC honors with a seventh-place finish at the league meet.

Devey is a biochemical chemical-biology  major who has participated in four meets with a top finish of 18th at the George Mason Invitational.

Smith, a liberal arts and sciences major, has competed in five races with a 13th-place finish at the Oakland C.C. Raider Run.

Vincent is majoring in chemistry and has run in four meets this fall with an 18th-place finish at the Oakland C.C. Raider Run.

Jackson, a liberal arts and sciences major, has competed in five races with two top-10 finishes.

Wayne State has won two meets this fall and placed third at the league meet on October 22nd at Ashland.  The Warriors will run in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship this Saturday at Ferris State.  The top three men's squads will earn a spot in the national championship meet on November 19th in Spokane, Wash.
