State roundup: Wayne State rallies past Northern

D.J. Zezula threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Will Wheat with 36 seconds left to cap Wayne State’s comeback in a 34-31 win over Northern Michigan in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. Wayne State (3-4, 2-4) trailed 31-20 entering the fourth quarter but tightened the gap on field goals of 35 and 27 yards by Paul Graham less than three minutes apart to make it a one-possession game. Then on Wayne State’s final drive, Zezula connected with Wheat and ran in the ensuing two-point conversion to provide the finishing touches on an 8-play, 80-yard drive in the waning minutes. Zezula finished 17-of-27 for 175 yards and Wheat had three catches for 33 yards, yet most of Wayne State’s damage was done on the ground. Romello Brown led the rushing attack with 157 yards on 26 carries, including touchdown runs of 1 and 10 yards. Demetrius Stinson, a management major, added a 1-yard rushing score in the first.
