Popular app development class to be offered this winter

It is estimated that 70% of the world’s population — that’s about 6.1 billion people — will have smartphones by 2020. And an increasing number of employees and customers expect to interface with organizations using mobile technology. As organizations scramble to meet this demand, they are looking for employees with the right mix of technical skills, business know-how and creativity to bring compelling mobile applications to market.

Mike Ilitch School of Business students can learn these skills in Special Topics in Information Systems: Mobile Application Development (ISM 5670 / ISM 8000), offered in winter 2018.

The hands-on class, designed and taught by information systems management faculty member and Director of Computing Services Director Richard Lerman, will provide a foundation for understanding the value of mobile applications in the enterprise, as well as teach students to design, create and publish mobile applications for the Android OS using MIT’s App Inventor.

“This tool allows you to quickly develop a mobile application using building blocks, so you can focus your energy on your design, and not on programming language syntax,” Lerman said.

Students are required to bring their own Android device to class and will ultimately design their own mobile app.

“ISM 5670 is an active learning course,” Lerman said. “We will perform a hands-on assignment during every class meeting.”

Priority registration for winter classes opens Oct. 30.
