Husband accounting lecture to feature Jay D. Hanson of PCAOB

The Mike Ilitch School of Business Department of Accounting presents the George R. Husband Distinguished Lecture, delivered by Jay D. Hanson, a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Hanson's lecture, "Bright Futures for Bright Accountants," will be held Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at 2 p.m. in DeRoy Auditorium.

The PCAOB is a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to oversee the audits of public companies in order to protect investors and the public interest by promoting informative, accurate, and independent audit reports. The PCAOB also oversees the audits of brokers and dealers, including compliance reports filed pursuant to federal securities laws, to promote investor protection. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which created the PCAOB, required that auditors of U.S. public companies be subject to external and independent oversight for the first time in history.

Hanson was appointed to the PCAOB by the Securities and Exchange Commission in January 2011 and reappointed for a second term, ending in October 2018.

Prior to joining the board, Hanson spent nearly 32 years at McGladrey & Pullen LLP (now RSMUS). At the time of his appointment to the PCAOB, Hanson was the national director of accounting, overseeing the firm's accounting guidance and training practices, as well as leader of the firm's Accounting Standards Group.

Hanson served as a member of the Emerging Issues Task Force of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) from 2006 to 2011. He also was a member of the Financial Reporting Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) from 2005 to 2011, serving as chair from 2008-2011.

Hanson is a certified public accountant licensed to practice in his home state of Minnesota. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, with a B.A. in business administration, accounting and mathematics.

The George R. Husband Lecture is convened by the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business. Husband was an accounting educator and a leader in his field. His former students and admirers thought so highly of him that they endowed a professorship, scholarship, and annual Distinguished Lecture Series in his memory nearly 40 years after his untimely death in 1958.

The program is open to the public at no charge. RSVP online, or contact the Department of Accounting at 313-577-4530 or wsuaccounting@gmail.com
