Former Detroit CFO Jack Martin to deliver 2016 Richard H. Austin Lecture for Accounting Excellence

Wayne State University’s Mike Ilitch School of Business will host its Richard H. Austin Lecture Series for Accounting Excellence at McGregor Memorial Conference Center on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016. Workshops begin at 10 a.m. and the keynote and luncheon start at noon. The event honors the legacy of Richard Austin, Michigan’s first black CPA and the first African American in the U.S. to be elected to the statewide post of Secretary of State.

Keynote lecture

This year’s keynote speaker is Jack Martin, CPA, who has served as Detroit’s chief financial officer and a member of the city’s Financial Review Board, emergency manager of Detroit Public Schools and the Highland Park school district, and CFO of the U.S. Department of Education. Martin's lecture is titled "Your WSU Accounting Degree: Unlimited Professional Opportunities."

Martin earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master of business administration from Wayne State and was honored with a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the business school in 2004.

Workshops

Beginning at 10 a.m. is a series workshops are designed to help students obtain and succeed in accounting careers. Workshops will be led by representatives from accounting firms Deloitte, Doeren Mayhew, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Plante Moran and UHY, as well as Kapstone Training Services.

Workshops include:

  • Attributes of a “Star” Employee
  • How to Have a Successful Internship
  • Overcoming Obstacles in Accounting as a Minority or Non-Traditional Student
  • Professional Etiquette, Including Email and Social Media
  • The Value of Getting Involved on Campus

Registration

The event is open to all students, alumni and friends of the Mike Ilitch School of Business. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
