Detroit Free Press: Marick Masters on FCA-PSA Group merger
The plan to create "Stellantis" from the merger of Peugeot-maker PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles next year raises questions about whether vehicles will continue to carry the brand name in the years ahead. Despite concerns about the fate of specific brands, the future of the company as a whole is better served by the merger with PSA Group, said Marick Masters, a Wayne State University business professor. FCA on its own is not sustainable and needs a larger footprint, he said, reflecting the thinking that is powering much of the push for consolidation through mergers and partnerships in the auto industry. "I think it's better than if they hadn’t done it," Masters said of the merger effort.
