Chris Ilitch: Red Wings arena name to be unveiled in 1-2 months

A corporate naming rights deal for the Detroit Red Wings’ new $627.5 million arena will be announced in a month or two. That news emerged today from Chris Ilitch, who spoke to nearly 800 people gathered at a luncheon inside Motor City Casino Hotel to honor him and his father, Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, as Crain’s Detroit Business’ Newsmakers of the Year for 2015. In a conversation prior to the luncheon, the president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings Inc. said negotiations for the arena naming rights are complete and the rollout process is underway. This year, Mike and Chris Ilitch were jointly honored as the top newsmakers for what they announced in 2015: A sprawling expansion of the massive multiuse development around the arena, nearly $100 million in additional spending for the arena itself, and a $40 million pledge for a new Wayne State University business school that will be built next to the hockey venue. It’s the first time Crain’s has honored a joint newsmaker of the year.
