Business student-athlete Anthony Bass looking to make MLB comeback

Anthony Bass is hoping a season spent overseas will help him return to the major leagues. Bass, a former standout pitcher at Trenton High and Wayne State, went to Japan last year to rejuvenate his career after pitching in the majors with the San Diego Padres (2011-2013), Houston Astros (2014) and Texas Rangers (2015). Bass returned to Wayne State's campus Saturday to host his fifth annual pitching camp. Bass was joined by pitchers Matt Shoemaker of Eastern Michigan and the Los Angeles Angels and Jharel Cotton of the Oakland A’s. Bass said he is glad to be back at Wayne State, helping to raise money for the baseball team’s spring trip. Bass remembers when he was a student-athlete and spent time fund-raising. So when he became a pro, he decided to give back with the pitching clinic. This year, Bass will give some of the money to the Wayne State Police Department, in memory of officer Collin Rose, who was killed in the line of duty in November. Wayne State baseball coach Ryan Kelley said that decision is typical of Bass. “He’s been a leader throughout his time as a student-athlete and his alumni years.”
