Marketing department's practitioner panel discussion addressed pricing issues

The School of Business Administration's Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management hosted the 14th Annual Pricing Conference August 15-18 at MotorCity Casino Hotel. The academic conference, first held at Fordham University in 1998, is hosted in a new location each year and invites research papers related to various aspects of pricing and price promotions from both academic and managerial perspectives. It serves as a forum for practitioners and academics to come together and share ideas.

Dr. Abe Biswas, Dr. Sujay Dutta and Dr. Abi Guha, who share research interests in pricing, coordinated the conference for the first time at Wayne State University. The program included a special practitioner panel discussion geared toward industry professionals, students and alumni interested in learning about key pricing challenges facing businesses today. Four senior business executives with deep pricing expertise shared their knowledge.

“This session was an excellent forum for practitioners and academics to come together and share ideas,” said Margaret Williams, interim dean of Wayne State’s business school.

“We lined up a great panel of experts who shared their insights about important trends and changes in the pricing domain across industries, especially how consumers respond to various pricing mechanisms.”

The panel discussion, Pricing Challenges Faced by Businesses, featured the following panelists:

Ram Balasubramanian, Vice President, Global Pricing, Marriott International
Jeff Rolfs, Finance Director for Pricing and Incentives, General Motors
Marc Rubin, former Vice President of Global Pricing Strategy, Estée Lauder
Julian Ryu, Senior Manager, Pricing and Profitability Management, Deloitte Consulting
