Warriors Business Community concludes successful inaugural school year

The Warriors Business Community, the one-of-a-kind living learning community developed exclusively for students in Wayne State’s Mike Ilitch School of Business, is wrapping up its first year.

Located on the fourth floor of Ghafari Hall, the WBC is designed to help business students start building powerful professional networks with each other right here on campus. It encourages community involvement and academic success among business students.

The WBC was something that the business school had never done before, according to Linda Zaddach, assistant dean of student services. She said the idea for the program came from Dean Forsythe.

“I would consider it successful, given it was our first time,” Zaddach said.

According to academic advisor Jessica Pfeiffer, during the first semester, students who signed up for WBC were given a $1,000 scholarship and a laptop.

“They also benefitted from improv classes, trips to the planetarium and onsite academic advising,” Pfeiffer said. “We bring specialized activities to them.”

Pfeiffer said students really enjoy being able to live on a floor with students in the same program.

To grow their professional networks, members of the WBC were invited to high-profile events such as the GM Roadshow, Inforum Women’s Leadership Luncheon, North American International Auto Show, and alumni executive lunches with PricewaterhouseCoopers and other Detroit firms.

For 2016-17, $2,000 housing scholarships will be offered to the first 30 newly admitted business majors who sign up for the WBC. Scholarships are funded by the Mike Ilitch School of Business. Business students can indicate that they’d like to be considered for the WBC on their WSU housing application.
