Professors honored for research and teaching excellence

Each year the School of Business Administration presents three special awards to honor faculty members for exemplary dedication to student advancement and business research. These awards include the Excellence in Research Award, the Board of Visitors Faculty Fellowship, and the Excellence in Teaching Award.

The 2011 Excellence in Research Award went to Santanu Mitra, associate professor of accounting. Mitra, who achieved tenure last year, won the award for publishing 15 scholarly articles in high quality peer-reviewed journals over the last five years, three of which were published in top-tier academic journals.

The award centers on Mitra’s work on financial accounting, earnings quality and auditing issues relating to U.S. publicly traded corporations. He also wrote two important book chapters on corporate governance and emerging theories for educators and practitioners published by national and international publishing houses. Mitra is a regular reviewer of research papers for several academic journals and of conference papers for American Accounting Association. He serves on the editorial advisory boards of three peer-reviewed academic journals. Mitra is a member of both American Accounting Association and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

The school’s second research-focused award is the Board of Visitors Faculty Fellowship. The Board awards one fellowship annually to a faculty member who has achieved prominence in their field of research or has shown progress towards that end.

This year’s fellowship was awarded to Amanuel Tekleab, associate professor of management. Tekleab received the award for his distinguished work on eight peer-reviewed journal articles in the last five years and a highly-cited book chapter during the same time.

His work in the organizational behavior field centers on workplace issues, team conflicts, and leader/member relationships. He also serves on three editorial boards for scholarly management journals and assists with the PhD program.

Each fellowship lasts for three years. Attila Yaprak, professor of marketing and international business, and Mai Iskandar-Datta, professor of finance, continue to hold their fellowships from 2009 and 2010.

The 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award went to Richard Beltramini, professor of marketing and advertising, for his scholarly work in teaching and learning and his dedication to enhancing his students’ educational experience. He serves on editorial boards and reviews several academic journals, and in the classroom, Beltramini's use of "real world" projects delivers hands-on experience for students to the benefit of local firms. He also is adviser to the Wayne State chapter of the American Advertising Federation and coordinates the students’ participation in the National Student Advertising Competition. Beltramini is the first faculty member to receive both the research excellence and teaching excellence awards and the only one to receive the teaching excellence award twice. He also was the first recipient of the Board of Visitors faculty fellow award in 2005.
