New course scheduling matrix benefits students and administrators alike

Wayne State University has introduced a new course scheduling matrix and final exam schedule that will begin in the Winter 2017 semester.

The new matrix and schedule were designed to address and resolve scheduling problems. The changes include classes running for 50 minutes, all courses beginning on either the hour or the half hour and a 10-minute passing period between classes.

With the new course schedule, morning classes will begin at 8:30 a.m. and evening classes will end by 9:20 p.m. All common final exams will be moved to Friday of finals week and final exam periods will be reduced to two hours in order to accommodate four final exam periods per day.

“The new matrix enables us to schedule much more easily with more times set,” said Linda Zaddach, assistant dean of student services in the Mike Ilitch School of Business. “This also enables students to reduce the number of days they have to come on campus.”

The academic units that will not be using the new matrix are the Law School, the M.D. program in the School of Medicine, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the M.B.A. program in the Mike Ilitch School of Business. All other academic units will use the new matrix.

“The M.B.A. program isn’t included because our classes are now at 11 and four weeks, so they wouldn’t fit in the new matrix,” Kiantee Rupert, director of the Ilitch School’s Graduate Programs Office said. “That way, students can take classes at an accelerated rate and progress to graduation faster.”

The following course schedule types will not be using the new matrix: Laboratory (LAB), Clinical (CLN), Individual (IND), Internship (INT), Fine Arts Studio (FAS), Performing Arts Studio (PAS) and Other (OTH).
