Funeral Monday for Professor Emeritus Victor Doherty

Victor C. Doherty III died peacefully on Dec. 14, 2016, in Troy, Mich., at the age of 84.

Doherty was professor emeritus, having served as a member of the management faculty until his retirement in 1997. Vic, as he was known to his colleagues, served as dean of the now Mike Illitch School of Business from 1972 to 1979, when he was forced to step down for medical reasons. During his deanship, in 1976 the school received its initial accreditation from AACSB.

Doherty served on many boards including the Accounting Aide Society, Mount Carmel Hospital and Angels Place. He was appointed by President James Carter and then by Ronald Regan as the midwest regional advisor to the Small Business Administration. 

He is remembered by his colleagues for his good nature and erudite advice, both sought and exchanged by the faculty, staff, students and alumni of the school. 

He enjoyed his work and loved his family. He was proud of his children and supported their passions to pursue entrepreneurial ventures that serve others. He is survived by his wife Katie Kavanagh Doherty, and his sister Anne Doherty Mercure, daughter Molly O'Shea Gallucci (Tony), sons Victor "Chuck" Doherty IV (Amy), Thomas M Doherty his grandchildren Charley, Maggie, Annie Doherty, Mairen, Declan, Conall O'Shea, and Leo and Mia Gallucci.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 18, from 2-8 p.m. with Rosary 7 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy. 

A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at Christ, Our Light Catholic Church, 3077 Glouchester, Troy. Rev. Donald Demmer will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Doherty's life.
