First pieces of steel placed for new Red Wings arena in Detroit

Olympia Development of Michigan on Monday announced the first pieces of steel were placed at the site of the Detroit Events Center on Woodward Avenue. A 41-foot, 4-inch beam of metal was the first of many to go in at the site, where the Detroit Red Wings are expected to play beginning in 2017. In a little under two years, the entire arena and all of the mixed-use development for the initial build out is expected to be completed. On top of the arena, another $200 million is planned in additional development. The Ilitch family, who own Olympia and the Red Wings, late last week announced a $40-million gift to Wayne State University to be used to build a brand new Mike Ilitch School of Business to be located just north of the new arena on Woodward Avenue.
