Detroit Free Press: Marick Masters on UAW scandal, reputation

Federal prosecutors have charged former UAW president Gary Jones with conspiring to embezzle union funds and aiding racketeering activity. He's the highest ranking union official to face charges. The scandal marks a fall from grace for the union once considered to be the gold standard of honest governance, said Marick Masters, a business professor at Wayne State University. "It's been the icon. It's been really the union that prided itself on policing its own operations and paying its officers a relatively modest salary vis-a-vis some other union leaders across the country," Masters said. "It's an order of magnitude different from your typical union scandal, in that the breadth of involvement, the scope of involvement is extreme by any stretch of the imagination."
