CEUs available for health care conflict resolution seminar Oct. 19
Wayne State University’s Mike Ilitch School of Business will present a full-day, interactive seminar, “Resolving Conflict in Health Care,” on Friday, Oct. 19. The event is organized by Professor Marick Masters.
Instructors include Brian Peters, CEO of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA); Deborah Childs, retired chief human resource officer for the University of Michigan Health System; and Edward Hartfield, dispute resolution professional for over 40 years.
The seminar is designed for professionals in healthcare, including physicians, nurses, healthcare provider administrators, managers, human resource managers, healthcare insurers and healthcare regulators. Attendees may register online at ilitchbusiness.wayne.edu/health-care.

“Resolving Conflict in Health Care” consists of lecture, discussions and small group exercises on the following topics:
- Identifying the benefits and costs of conflict
- Reducing the organizational costs of conflict and litigation
- Preventing unhealthy conflict
- De-escalating conflict
- Having difficult conversations
- Dealing with difficult people
- Reducing the likelihood of litigation
- Conflict management as a risk management strategy
- Using alternative dispute resolution techniques (negotiation, mediation, arbitration)
- Establishing conflict management/change management systems
About the instructors
Brian Peters is CEO of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA), one of the nation’s largest state hospital associations. In addition to overseeing state and federal government relations on behalf of nearly 150 Michigan nonprofit community hospitals, he provides executive leadership of the MHA Health Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit entity, as well as the MHA Service Corporation.
Deborah Childs retired from the University of Michigan Health System (now known as Michigan Medicine) in 2014 after 40 years of service, over 25 of which were spent in leadership positions in the Health System Human Resources Department. For the final 10 years, she served as chief human resource officer for the health system.
Edward Hartfield has been a dispute resolution professional for over 40 years, including commissioner with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and a member of the seven-person Federal Service Impasses Panel, which resolves disputes in the U.S. government.
Marick Masters, who will facilitate the seminar, is professor of management and adjunct professor of political science at Wayne State, and director of Labor@Wayne, which includes the Douglas A. Fraser Center for Workplace Issues and the master of arts in employment and labor relations. He holds a Ph.D. in labor and industrial relations from the University of Illinois; his research and teaching interests are in negotiations, business and labor political activities, and union finances.
The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, in the Wayne State Student Center Building Room 285. Continental breakfast, lunch, parking and a binder of materials are included.
