CARMA hosts kickoff lecture by Aguinis

On Sept. 23, CARMA hosted its first live webcast lecture of the 2011-2012 CARMA Consortium Webcast Program at Wayne State University. The distinguished presenter was Herman Aguinis of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and his presentation was “Debunking Myths and Urban Legends About Meta-analysis.”

CARMA, the Center for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis, is an interdisciplinary center devoted to helping faculty, graduate students and professionals learn of current developments in various areas of research methods and statistics for organizational, social and management sciences. It was founded in 1997 at Virginia Commonwealth University and relocated to Wayne State University in January 2010 along with its director, Larry Williams. Williams, in addition to directing the center, is professor of management and dean's research chair in the School of Business Administration and also professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

CARMA offers two programs, domestic (Consortium Webcast) and international (International Video Library). The Consortium Webcast program offers faculty and students the opportunities to view, as a group, a series of 10 live lectures per program year presented by nationally recognized methodologists. Each lecture is delivered live from Wayne State, with video and audio, over the Internet. These lectures are targeted at the advanced doctoral student level and typically include an introduction to the topic as well as a consideration of current technical issues. The Consortium Webcast program not only provides access to live lectures, members also can view 69 CARMA lecture videos recorded in previous years. The International Video Library program also includes access to the 69 lecture videos and the 10 additional recorded lectures added over the course of the academic year.

CARMA has enjoyed considerable success in recent years. For the 2010-2011 programs, 164 universities participated in both programs, including international schools such as the University of Melbourne, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the London School of Economics. Member universities from within the United States include Northwestern University, Cornell University, University of Colorado - Boulder, University of Michigan, North Carolina University and Texas A&M University.

CARMA has nine more live webcasts scheduled as part of the 2011-2012 program. Visit the CARMA calendar for upcoming programs.
