Business Student Senate receives Student Organization Community Service Award

The Business Student Senate is this year’s recipient of the School of Business Administration’s 2011 Student Organization Community Service Award. The Senate, made up of elected members and representatives from each of the other student organizations in the business school, developed a year-long agenda filled with activities and goals.

In addition to addressing the needs of its student constituents, this year’s Senate resolved to get out into the community and do their part to improve the lives of others. In December, they organized the Big Give Annual Fundraiser to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit. With a goal of raising $900 and a willing Senate volunteer with a Santa suit in hand, the organization set up shop in the Student Center building. As Santa began ringing bells and shouting greetings of “ho, ho, ho” to the campus community, his many Senate elves accepted donations totaling over $1,300. Exceeding their goal enabled the group to purchase, wrap and distribute two or more gifts to every child in the club.

Next up was the American Red Cross blood drive. Senate members created fliers, made appointments for donors and hosted the event in the Fishbowl Lounge of the Prentis Building. By its conclusion, they received 40 donations and discovered that the blood donated could save up to 120 lives. Their enthusiasm and commitment to help others benefitted not only those in the community, but themselves as well.
