Deadline extended: Apply by Jan. 26 for business study abroad program to Canada

Quebec Join the Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business for a summer break study abroad program to Canada. You’ll travel by rail with professors Mark Savitskie and Gary Shields during WSU’s summer break, May 15-24, 2018. The application deadline is Jan. 26.

This three-credit program will focus on Canadian business and management practices, and it will provide opportunities to dive into leading Canadian industries and companies. The itinerary includes meetings with domestic and international companies, tours of corporate manufacturing and distribution facilities, visits with business professionals and more. You’ll also explore the vibrant culture, arts and entertainment scenes each location has to offer.

You’ll visit several major Canadian cities and metropolitan areas, including:

  • Quebec City, one of the oldest European settlements in North America
  • Montreal, a major port and hub of French culture and business
  • Toronto, recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world
  • Hamilton, a major Canadian manufacturing area

“The study abroad program provides the student with a unique opportunity to leverage their collegiate time by broadening their horizons beyond just the academic in-the-classroom experience,” Savitskie said. “In study abroad, students develop lasting friendships with their fellow traveling students and faculty.  And, they acquire a better understanding of the world around them – its people, culture and business practices – in a way that will give them a ‘leg up’ in preparing them for their professional life after graduation.”

Shields added, "This study abroad trip, like the others offered by Wayne State, will allow the student to gain knowledge of how business operates globally in a way that textbooks and lectures can't fully capture. Employers know this and will value this experience on your resume. Plus it will be more fun than reading a textbook and listening to lectures!"

This program is open to all undergraduate business majors and graduate business students, but may accept students from other majors on a case-by-case basis. To learn how the three-credit hour directed study program would apply toward your degree requirements, undergraduate students should contact academic advisor Louise Moceri at ilitch-global@wayne.edu or 313-577-4510. Graduate business students should contact their academic advisor at gradbusiness@wayne.edu or 313-577-4511.

To travel to Canada, you will need a passport which is valid for at least 6 months after your return date. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you may need a visa to travel to Canada. Students may also obtain a Michigan Enhanced Driver's license, which is a special driver's license that allows Michigan motorists to cross into the U.S. when traveling by sea or land from Canada without the need for a passport or other identification documents.
