Undergrad sport and entertainment management class to be offered in winter 2018

This coming winter, undergraduate students of all majors will have the chance to learn about sport and entertainment management through a new course offering.

Introduction to Sport and Entertainment Management, cross-listed as SEM 5100 and MGT 5100, provides an overview of the industry with emphasis on the use of business principles to identify, attract and retain consumers.

The course includes:

  • Interaction with front offices of Detroit’s major league teams
  • Building tours of sport and entertainment facilities in the District Detroit, such as Little Caesars Arena, the Fox Theatre and Comerica Park
  • Discussion of current events in sports
  • Case studies from the MLB and NHL with a focus on Detroit sports

The class will be taught by Associate Professor Scott Tainsky, director of the sport and entertainment management program at the Ilitch School. The program launched this fall with an M.B.A. concentration and has plans to expand.

When it opens in 2018, the new Mike Ilitch School of Business facility will be just steps away from Little Caesars Arena, the soon-to-be home of both the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Pistons, and within a short walk – less than a half-mile – of the Fox Theatre, the Fillmore, Ford Field and Comerica Park.

Priority registration opens Monday, Oct. 30. See the WSU Class Schedule for complete course offerings.
