Steel work at Mike Ilitch School of Business nears completion

Crews working to make the new Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business a reality placed the symbolic last piece of the steel structure Wednesday at a "topping out" ceremony.

Steelwork started in April after excavation on the site began in January on the $50 million development at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Temple Street in downtown Detroit. About 18-20 ironworkers are on the site each day. The structural steel work is nearly complete. Next steps include installing the building's interior walls, enclosing the building and beginning to install utilities.

The ironworkers signed their names and decorated the last piece and hoisted it with banners, flags and trees for the Wednesday ceremony. Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings Inc., and Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson were among who spoke at the event, which marked a milestone in the school's construction process.
