Fall career fairs showcase quality of WSU business students and programs

While there really isn’t much downtime in the School of Business Administration’s Career Planning and Placement Office, the fall semester is certainly CPP’s busiest time. Fall is when the office hosts the school’s two biggest career fairs: the Meet the Firms Career Fair for accounting majors and the Career Day Career Fair for all WSU business students. Now that these two signature events are over for this year, it’s time to look back at some of the highlights.

First, attendance at both fairs was exceptional. More than 160 students attended the Meet the Firms fair, where they had the opportunity to meet with 55 representatives from several different accounting firms. Career Day attendance totaled 477 students, a nearly 40 percent increase over 2012. Career Day attendees had the opportunity to meet with more than 120 representatives from a broad range of companies.

While the vast majority of employer attendees have been recruiting WSU business students for years, CPP Director Emily Kravetz said there were a few notable newcomers for 2013.

"The Kresge Foundation was here for the first time, and they were very pleased with our finance students," Kravetz said. "We also had Panalpina, a new employer for us in global supply chain, and Aldi, the global supermarket chain."

Andrew Miller, a senior majoring in accounting and finance, attended both fairs this year. He says the career fairs aren't just for graduating seniors.

"I would highly recommend the fairs to sophomores and juniors, as well as seniors," Miller said. "Go for the experience and to see what employers are looking for."

Miller secured follow-up interviews with seven firms from this fall's fairs. He accepted an accounting internship with Deloitte, that he will being in January.

About the Career Planning and Placement Office

The School of Business Administration’s Career Planning and Placement Office was created in 2005 upon the recommendation of the school’s Board of Visitors. CPP supports business students and alumni with their career planning needs, from career assessments to resume reviews, as well as job and internship search support and career advising. In addition to its on-campus career fairs, CPP averages roughly 250 employer interviews and 2,000 student career advising appointments per year. Additionally, more than 900 employers are registered with the office’s waynebizcareers.com website.

The office will host another career fair in the winter semester. Students and employers alike are encouraged to visit business.wayne.edu/careerplanning/index.php or waynebizcareers.com to learn more.
