Deborah Jones

Biography

Dr. Deb–as she is known to most of her students–has been a member of the Mike Ilitch School of Business faculty since 1994. Since then she has developed, coordinated, and taught many courses in the Accounting curriculum. While her first love is in the Tax area–both application and policy–Deb enjoys engaging our students from all majors via Introductory Financial Accounting. She was also very involved in the development and launch of the initial Masters of Science in Accounting program and helped develop courses for the new program.

While Deb’s primary focus has been on teaching, she has authored a small collection of publications and presentations, including one which (with co-authors) received a Distinguished Paper Award at a Midwest Business Administration Association’s Annual Meeting. Her academic presentations have been in the areas of corporate social performance, reputation, and social disclosure. She has also presented to practitioner groups in the areas of digital tax research resources and changes in governmental entity financial reporting.

In addition to her service as a member of the Faculty Senate and multiple school administrative committees, she also serves as the Faculty Advisor to our Warriors in Accounting and Business chapter and is a much relied upon informal mentor to many of our Accounting students.

Deb is a CPA (Illinois, 1983) and holds professional memberships in the American Accounting Association, American Taxation Association and North American Tax Policy Academy.

Prior to joining the WSU community, Deb earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale in 1983. She spent three years as a member of the tax practice with Arthur Andersen’s St Louis Missouri office. It was there she was first exposed to the joys of teaching through both staff and client training engagements. Deb left Andersen to pursue her PhD at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, graduating in 1996.
